Henry Ison & Sons supports Dying Matters Awareness Week

Our team showed their support for Dying Matters Awareness week, which ran from 14 to 20 May.

It highlights the importance of talking more openly about dying, death, bereavement, and making plans for the end of life.

Staff from two Henry Ison & Sons branches, Allesley Old Road, Coventry, and Leamington Spa, dedicated their window spaces to the awareness week with eye-catching displays and invited people to pop in for a chat over a cuppa and cake.

The team from the Allesley Old Road branch held a ‘let’s talk about it coffee morning’, inviting the community to pop in.

Allesley Old Road Funeral Arranger Kim Skerrett said: “We wanted to start getting rid of the stigma around talking about death and pre-planning your funeral. We just want to begin the conversation, so that families can be prepared in any situation and will have our support from the very beginning.

“It is not just about people planning funerals, we were also offering information and support for families about bereavement, the funeral planning process and what decisions to prepare for after a loved one dies.

“We want people to know they are welcome in the branch for a chat at any time.”

Paul Atkinson, Funeral Arranger at the Leamington branch, said: “We wanted to empower our community with knowledge of choice available in the area and to give them confidence to be able to talk openly about death and their individual wishes after they die.”

Paul and the team shared information about prepaid funeral plans, and the many ways a funeral can be personalised. Practical support and information was also available around important decisions friends and families need to make.

Paul said: “It was a successful day. There was no pressure to chat about anything people didn’t want to, it was about helping them to make that first step to talking more openly about bereavement and thinking about personal or their family’s wishes – over plenty of tea, coffee and cake.”
